    • The President today announced the retirement of Thomas Murphy as United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York.
    • Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky of South Vietnam breakfasted with the President at the White House.
    • F. Ritter Shumway, president of the United States Chamber of Commerce, met with the President at the White House.
    • The annual Thanksgiving turkey was presented to the President by Lloyd H. Peterson, president of the National Turkey Federation. Representative John B. Anderson of Illinois was also present for the ceremony at the White House.

Archival Holdings

  • The H. R. Haldeman Diaries consists of seven handwritten diaries, 36 dictated diaries recorded as sound recordings, and two handwritten audio cassette tape subject logs. The diaries and logs reflect H. R. Haldeman’s candid personal record and reflections on events, issues, and people encountered during his service in the Nixon White House. As administrative assistant to the President and Chief of Staff, Haldeman attended and participated in public events and private meetings covering the entire scope of issues in which the Nixon White House engaged in during the years 1969-1973. The meeting occurred in the White House and ran from 8:31 to 10:09 a.m. (Ibid., White House Central Files, President’s Daily Diary) Holdridge forwarded a copy of this memorandum to Kissinger under a November 25 covering memorandum, recommending that he approve it.       Source: National Archives, Nixon Presidential Materials, NSC Files, Box 531, Country Files, Far East, Indonesia, Vol. II. Secret; Nodis. Repeated to CINCPAC for Admiral McCain. A notation on the first page in Kissinger’s handwriting reads: “We can’t rest till they [or they will] buy Soviet arms. HK” An arrow was drawn from this notation to Haig’s name, which is followed by Haig’s initials.

    • 160. National Intelligence Estimate, Washington, November 24, 1970

      Source: Central Intelligence Agency, NIC Files, Job 79–R01012A. Top Secret. The CIA and the intelligence organizations of the Department of State, the Department of Defense, the AEC, and the NSA participated in the preparation of this estimate. The Director of the CIA submitted this estimate with the concurrence of all members of the USIB with the exception of the representative of the FBI, who abstained on the grounds that the subject was outside of his jurisdiction. The table of contents is not printed. The full text of this NIE is in the CIA FOIA Electronic Reading Room (www.foia.cia.gov). Nixon sent a letter to Helms on March 8, 1971, thanking him for the NIE, which marked “a considerable improvement over last year’s version.” The President commended the NIE’s “frequent sharply-defined, clearly argued discussions of various contested issues;” its “attempt to incorporate a wide range of sources,” including Soviet SALT statements; its attempt to identify the most likely Soviet force models and goals; and its quantitative detail.   • The Kissinger telephone conversation transcripts consist of approximately 20,000 pages of transcripts of Kissinger’s telephone conversations during his tenure as Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (1969-1974) and Secretary of State (1973-1974) during the administration of President Richard Nixon. Visit the finding aid for more information.
