Following is a listing of items of general interest which were announced in the press but not made public as formal White House press releases during the period covered by this issue. - His Imperial Majesty Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, the Shahanshah of Iran, and Her Imperial Majesty the Empress have accepted the invitation of the President and Mrs. Nixon to make an official visit to Washington this autumn.
- The President met with representatives of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, including John H. Murphy III, Association president.
- The President discussed the subject of campus unrest with six young Congressmen of a total of some 20 who had completed a tour of about 50 college campuses throughout the country. They were William E. Brock 3d of Tennessee, Louis Frey, Jr., of Florida, Edward G. Biester, Jr., of Pennsylvania, George Bush of Texas, Donald W. Riegle, Jr., of Michigan, and William A. Steiger of Wisconsin.

The H. R. Haldeman Diaries consists of seven handwritten diaries, 36 dictated diaries recorded as sound recordings, and two handwritten audio cassette tape subject logs. The diaries and logs reflect H. R. Haldeman’s candid personal record and reflections on events, issues, and people encountered during his service in the Nixon White House. As administrative assistant to the President and Chief of Staff, Haldeman attended and participated in public events and private meetings covering the entire scope of issues in which the Nixon White House engaged in during the years 1969-1973. On May 23 Sneider informed Kissinger that both the leadership of the Department of Defense and the JCS “were satisfied with the draft Decision Memorandum with one change assigning specific action on the negotiating strategy paper to the EA/IG and the Under Secretaries Committee.” (Memorandum from Sneider to Kissinger, May 23; ibid.) On May 24 Kissinger sent this decision memorandum to Nixon for his approval, under a covering memorandum that discussed U.S. strategy during the Okinawa negotiations. Kissinger noted that the various Departments have “no basic disagreement” with NSDM 13. Nixon initialed his approval of NSDM 13 on May 28, and returned it to the NSC the same day. A notation on the first page reads: “Today.” This memorandum was Sonnenfeldt’s second effort to soften the tone of official U.S. response to the Canadian decision to reduce its military forces in NATO. In a May 27 memorandum to Kissinger, following a presentation by Cadieux to Laird, Sonnenfeldt noted Laird’s strong negative response and proposed that Kissinger “call the Secretary [Rogers] in Brussels and urge him to go easy on the Canadian presentation, and not to encourage others in their criticism” in order to keep open channels of negotiation. The memorandum was marked “disapproved” with the notation, “HAK says Laird’s ok on this.” (Ibid.)
