  • The H. R. Haldeman Diaries consists of seven handwritten diaries, 36 dictated diaries recorded as sound recordings, and two handwritten audio cassette tape subject logs. The diaries and logs reflect H. R. Haldeman’s candid personal record and reflections on events, issues, and people encountered during his service in the Nixon White House. As administrative assistant to the President and Chief of Staff, Haldeman attended and participated in public events and private meetings covering the entire scope of issues in which the Nixon White House engaged in during the years 1969-1973.       Source: National Archives, Nixon Presidential Materials, NSC Files, NSC Institutional Files (H–Files), Box H–110, NSC Minutes, Originals. Secret. Attached but not printed were the draft minutes for the meeting. A covering memorandum from Wright, April 7, suggests that he prepared these minutes. The time of the meeting is taken from the President’s Daily Diary. In addition to President Nixon, the following attended: Agnew, Rogers, Laird, Connally, Lincoln, Mitchell, Bush, Moorer, Cushman, Farley (Acting Director, ACDA), U.     • 165. Memorandum of Conversation, Washington, March 25, 1971, 5-6:50 p.m.

The meeting was held in the Map Room of the White House. The ending time of the meeting is taken from Kissinger’s Record of Schedule. (Library of Congress, Manuscript Division, Kissinger Papers, Box 438, Miscellany, 1968–76) The memorandum of conversation was forwarded to Nixon under a March 30 covering memorandum in which Kissinger wrote, “Dobrynin pressed me repeatedly on March 25 for a possible communication for him to carry to the North Vietnamese leaders who would be in Moscow for the Party Congress.” Kissinger added that he refused to provide a specific message that exceeded the January 9 terms, namely “that a separation of political and military issues was a possible negotiating approach.” Both memoranda are printed in full in Foreign Relations, 1969–1976, volume XIII, Soviet Union, October 1970–October 1971, Documents 154 and 164.

    • 218. Memorandum of Conversation, Washington, March 25, 1971

      Source: National Archives, Nixon Presidential Materials, NSC Files, Box 656, Country Files, Middle East, Middle East Nodis/Cedar/Plus, Vol. I. Secret; Nodis; Cedar Plus. The conversation took place in Kissinger’s office. All brackets are in the original. This memorandum is attached to a March 26 memorandum that Saunders sent to Kissinger both for his approval and to notify him that, at his request, he sent a copy “Eyes Only” to Sisco. Kissinger initialed his approval on it and wrote: “1) What’s the sense of approving it if it has already gone to Sisco; 2) Send copy to Rogers eyes only. Never again send unedited copy out.”

    U.S. Policy Towards International Production and Trafficking in Illegal Drugs

    • 185. Memorandum From Harold H. Saunders of the National Security Council Staff to the President’s Deputy Assistant for Domestic Affairs (Krogh), Washington, March 25, 1971

      Saunders provided Krogh with an assessment of the new Turkish Government’s attitudes and capabilities on reducing the flow of illegal opium from Turkey. He also transmitted an account of progress on U.S. efforts to control opium production in Turkey.

On March 12 Demirel resigned under pressure from military forces upset by Turkey’s political instability. Turkish President Sunay designated Nuhat Erim to form a new government.

      The mission relayed the outcome of the UN High Commissioner’s Baghdad discussions with Iraqi authorities about the arrests of Iraqi Jews.

    • 185. Memorandum From Deputy Director for Plans, Central Intelligence Agency (Karamessines) to the President’s Assistant for National Security Affairs (Kissinger), Washington, March 25, 1971., Washington, March 25, 1971

      Deputy Director Karamessines sent a report, which concluded that President Figueres and Communist Party Secretary General Manuel Mora were encountering difficulties in implementing their 1968 secret agreement. Figueres had encountered stiff opposition from the Legislature and his own party.

  • The Kissinger telephone conversation transcripts consist of approximately 20,000 pages of transcripts of Kissinger’s telephone conversations during his tenure as Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (1969-1974) and Secretary of State (1973-1974) during the administration of President Richard Nixon. Visit the finding aid for more information.

Audiovisual Holdings

  • The White House Tapes are sound recordings of President Richard Nixon's telephone conversations and of meetings held in the Oval Office and the Cabinet Room in the White House, the President's office in the Old Executive Office Building (OEOB), the Lincoln Sitting Room in the residence section of the White House, and several locations at the Presidential retreat at Camp David, Maryland. These recordings document many of the major events and decisions of the Nixon Administration from February 16, 1971 to July 18, 1973.
