Archival Holdings

  • The H. R. Haldeman Diaries consists of seven handwritten diaries, 36 dictated diaries recorded as sound recordings, and two handwritten audio cassette tape subject logs. The diaries and logs reflect H. R. Haldeman’s candid personal record and reflections on events, issues, and people encountered during his service in the Nixon White House. As administrative assistant to the President and Chief of Staff, Haldeman attended and participated in public events and private meetings covering the entire scope of issues in which the Nixon White House engaged in during the years 1969-1973. A notation on the memorandum indicates the President saw it. A copy was also sent to Sonnenfeldt, who drafted the memorandum to the President based on a June 10 memorandum from Hyland to Kissinger summarizing Kosygin’s foreign policy address, and another on June 12, summarizing Brezhnev’s election speech. The Central Intelligence Agency and the intelligence organizations of the Department of State, the Department of Defense, the Atomic Energy Commission, and the National Security Agency participated in the preparation this estimate. The Director of the CIA submitted this estimate with the concurrence of all members of the USIB with the exception of the representative of the FBI who abstained on the grounds that it was outside of his jurisdiction.

    • 197. Memorandum From Michael Guhin of the National Security Council Staff to the President’s Assistant for National Security Affairs (Kissinger), Washington, June 25, 1970

      Guhin reviewed recent Congressional comments in response to the delay in submitting the Geneva Protocol for ratification, discussed options for submitting it during the summer, and attached a letter from Senator Fulbright.

The memorandum was sent through Behr. A handwritten notation on the top, right hand corner of the memorandum states, “Action.” Kissinger wrote at the top of page one, “Pres. has answered memo – Now how about timing?” Following the last sentence on page two is written, “Behr/Guhin now working on this.”

    • 75. Memorandum From the President’s Assistant for National Security Affairs (Kissinger) to President Nixon, Washington, June 25, 1970

      Kissinger summarized the conclusions of Assistant Secretary Sisco’s report on the extent to which Iran could guarantee stability in the Persian Gulf.

A stamped note on the memorandum indicated that President Nixon read it. The report was in response to an attached, undated, handwritten instruction from Nixon, which read, “Give me a report (no priority) on the Shah’s idea of Iran (& Cento) playing a greater role in the Persian Gulf—Is it just too naive—”

  • The Kissinger telephone conversation transcripts consist of approximately 20,000 pages of transcripts of Kissinger’s telephone conversations during his tenure as Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (1969-1974) and Secretary of State (1973-1974) during the administration of President Richard Nixon. Visit the finding aid for more information.
