    Following is a listing of items of general interest which were announced in the press but not made public as formal White House press releases during the period covered by this issue. Appointments requiring Senate approval are not included since they appear in the list of nominations submitted to the Senate, below.

    • The President transmitted to the Congress the seventh annual report on Special International Exhibitions conducted during fiscal year 1969. The 47-page report is published by the United States Information Agency, based on material prepared by the Departments of Commerce and Labor and by USIA.
    • The President transmitted to the Senate for its advice and consent to ratification a convention between the United States and Finland for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income and property and a supplementary convention on extradition between the United States and France, relating to aircraft hijacking and narcotics offenses.
    • Roy Wilkins, Executive Director of the NAACP and recipient of the American Jewish Committee's American Liberties Medallion at a ceremony in New York this week, met with the President at the White House.

  • The Congressional Record is the official daily record of the debates and proceedings of the U.S. Congress.

Archival Holdings

  • The H. R. Haldeman Diaries consists of seven handwritten diaries, 36 dictated diaries recorded as sound recordings, and two handwritten audio cassette tape subject logs. The diaries and logs reflect H. R. Haldeman’s candid personal record and reflections on events, issues, and people encountered during his service in the Nixon White House. As administrative assistant to the President and Chief of Staff, Haldeman attended and participated in public events and private meetings covering the entire scope of issues in which the Nixon White House engaged in during the years 1969-1973.   • The National Archives Catalog is the online portal to the records held at the National Archives, and information about those records. It is the main way of describing our holdings and also provides access to electronic records and digitized versions of our holdings.

    • 158. Memorandum From Director of Central Intelligence Helms to the President’s Assistant for National Security Affairs (Kissinger) , Washington, May 13, 1970

On June 16, Peter Jessup, staff member for the 303 Committee, informed Helms of the following: “General Haig requests that this office do the summary of the exploitation of tensions in the USSR and the bloc from now on. The first memorandum from Kissinger to higher authority was drafted by Commander [Jonathan] Howe.     • 193. Memorandum From the Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs (Hillenbrand) to the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs (Johnson) , Washington, May 13, 1970

      Source: Department of State, INR/IL Historical Files, Records of the 40 Committee, Minutes. Secret; Eyes Only. Cleared in INR and EUR. A note by INR Director Ray Cline stated that his clearance did not extend to the portion of the memorandum that indicated Martin’s recommendation was “incompatible with the President’s policy toward Europe.” A May 13 memorandum from INR, cleared by Cline, however, stated that INR opposed the Martin proposal. (Ibid.) A May 13 memorandum from the Chief of the European Division, CIA, to the Deputy Director for Plans, supported Martin’s proposal. (Central Intelligence Agency, DO/EUR Files, Job 90–01383R)

    • 67. Memorandum From the President’s Assistant for National Security Affairs (Kissinger) to President Nixon , Washington, May 13, 1970

      Kissinger furnished a summary of General Earle Wheeler’s conversation with the Shah during the April CENTO meeting, adding that the Shah seemed to be testing the limits of Washington’s capacity to help him.

  • The Kissinger telephone conversation transcripts consist of approximately 20,000 pages of transcripts of Kissinger’s telephone conversations during his tenure as Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (1969-1974) and Secretary of State (1973-1974) during the administration of President Richard Nixon. Visit the finding aid for more information.
