Archival Holdings

  • The H. R. Haldeman Diaries consists of seven handwritten diaries, 36 dictated diaries recorded as sound recordings, and two handwritten audio cassette tape subject logs. The diaries and logs reflect H. R. Haldeman’s candid personal record and reflections on events, issues, and people encountered during his service in the Nixon White House. As administrative assistant to the President and Chief of Staff, Haldeman attended and participated in public events and private meetings covering the entire scope of issues in which the Nixon White House engaged in during the years 1969-1973.     • 434. Memorandum From Secretary of State Rogers to President Nixon, Washington, August 20, 1970

      Source: National Archives, Nixon Presidential Materials, NSC Files, Subject Files, Box 396, Stockpile. Secret. Attached to a September 5 memorandum from Vaky to Kissinger reporting that the President had approved Rogers’ recommendation and recommending that Kissinger sign a directive to the State Department and OEP informing the agencies of the President’s decision. Kissinger’s September 7 memorandum to Rogers and Lincoln, also attached, informed them that tin sales were further suspended for a period not to exceed 90 days and that plans to resume sales should be undertaken before the end of the 90-day period in order to take advantage of the favorable market. They were also to work out arrangements to minimize the risks to American lives and property.

    • 54. Memorandum From Viron P. Vaky of the National Security Council Staff to the President’s Assistant for National Security Affairs (Kissinger), Washington, August 20, 1970

      Source: National Security Council, Nixon Intelligence Files, Subject Files, Chile, 1970. Secret; Sensitive. Sent for information. Kissinger wrote, “make memo to Pres. recommending contacting the cut out,” in the upper right-hand corner. Vaky explained his reason for not following this instruction in Document 57. In a covering note to Kissinger on another copy of this memorandum, Winston Lord wrote, “Note last paragraph where Vaky says meeting may be necessary before Sept. 4 because of State opposition.     • 48. Telegram From Fred Valtin to the Central Intelligence Agency, Bonn, August 20, 1970

      Source: National Archives, Nixon Presidential Materials, NSC Files, Box 684, Country Files, Europe, Germany, Vol. VII. Secret. Repeated to Munich. The telegram was attached to a memorandum from Helms to Kissinger, August 25. Helms wrote: “Attached is a copy of Fred Valtinʼs cable from Bonn… . You will note that discussions with Chancellor Brandt are proposed for late September or early October. Prior to that meeting we will request further reviews with your office and with the State Department on the line to be taken.” Also attached was an NSC routing memorandum that reads as follows: “Ed—orig sent to Sonnenfeldt/Jessup (cy) for action. 8/26/70.” Copies were sent to Lord, Kissinger, and Haig.

A notation on the memorandum indicates that the President saw it. No drafting information appears on the memorandum. Sonnenfeldt forwarded it to Kissinger on August 17. (Ibid.) According to an attached routing slip, the President saw the memorandum on August 26.       The Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR) reported that President Duvalier had made conciliatory gestures toward the United States, probably in response to Ambassador Knox’s efforts to improve U.S.-Haiti relations.

  • The Kissinger telephone conversation transcripts consist of approximately 20,000 pages of transcripts of Kissinger’s telephone conversations during his tenure as Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (1969-1974) and Secretary of State (1973-1974) during the administration of President Richard Nixon. Visit the finding aid for more information.
