Search the National Archives Catalog Instructions

The National Archives Catalog is available from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). You can use it to search more than 2 million catalog records for materials located at NARA locations across the country.

Use the instructions below to search for all Nixon-related materials and/or for specific Textual Materials, White House Tapes, and Audiovisual Materials.

How to search the National Archives Catalog

You can use the search function to locate catalog records for Nixon-related textual materials, the White House Tapes, and Audiovisual Materials.

  1. Open http://www.archives.gov/research/catalog/

  2. Enter your keyword or keywords to search the Catalog OR use the Advanced Search function to refine your search by search term, data source, name of a person or organization, or time period.

Search for Textual Materials in the National Archives Catalog  [See Also:  Textual Materials]

Descriptions of collections and digital images of select Nixon Presidential Library textual materials are available in the National Archives Catalog.

  1. Select Advanced Search.

  2. Enter your query in the Search Term field.

  3. Click Search.

  4. Under Refine By: Type of Materials, select Textual Records.

  5. Under Refine By: Location, select Richard Nixon Library.

Search for White House Tapes in the National Archives Catalog  [See Also:  White House Tapes]

  1. Follow this link to visit the National Archives Catalog record for the Nixon White House Tapes.

  2. Select Search within this series button next to the file units listed in the "Includes" detail.

  3. Enter your search in the "Search our catalog" box at the top of the page and click the Search button.

Search for White House Photo Office (WHPO) digital images in the National Archives Catalog  [See Also:  Photographic Collections and White House Photographic Office Collection]

A representative collection of digital images is available. Individual photo records are organized by film roll and frame number, for example: 3661-17, 1229-03, and so on. Records may be cited using this syntax. 

  1. Follow this link to visit the National Archives Catalog record for the Nixon administration White House Photo Office series.

  2. Click the blue button labeled Search within this collection

  3. Browse all digitized images or enter your search term into the search box following the "*-*" and click the Search button.
